No bezel to turn, no chronograph to reset, no skeleton dial to look into. Ellery Watch is a round watch with two hands, a seconds hand and the date, and that is the whole of it.

A round case and a flat dial.

The dial is finished with a fine sunburst that runs out from the centre, with applied baton markers standing proud of it and a small ring of luminous dots around the outside. The Geneva script sits at twelve and the date sits at three. Nothing else is printed on it.

Steel Navy has a deep blue sunburst with raised numerals at twelve, nine and six. Steel Silver drops the numerals entirely and keeps only the batons, which makes it the quieter of the two. Same case, same bracelet.

It weighs 52g and the bracelet is 18mm wide on a folding clasp. 17cm is a short bracelet — it is cut for a slim wrist and it will not go round a broad one, so measure before you order.

Please read before ordering: this watch is not waterproof. It handles a splash and nothing more — take it off before you wash your hands, and keep it away from the shower, the sea and the pool. The case and the bracelet are a polished alloy rather than stainless steel, and the crystal is glass rather than a hardened mineral one, so it marks more easily than the rest of our watches. It arrives without a presentation box.

FAQ

Is it water resistant?+

No. The supplier rates it as not waterproof, and we would rather say so plainly than bury it. A splash is survivable; washing your hands with it on is not. Keep it out of the shower, the sea and the pool.

Will it fit my wrist?+

The bracelet is 17cm end to end, which is short. It suits a slim wrist and it will be tight or simply too small on a broad one. Put a tape measure round your wrist first — if you are over about 16cm, this is not the one. Links can be removed to make it smaller, but nothing can make it longer.

Is there a date window?+

Yes, at three o'clock, and it is the only complication on the dial. An owner puts it simply: it keeps the date and the time right.

What are the case and bracelet made of?+

A polished alloy, both of them, not stainless steel. That is what keeps the whole watch at 52g and keeps it at this price. The finish names describe the colour, not the metal.

What is the crystal?+

Glass, not the hardened mineral crystal the rest of our watches use. It is clear and it does the job, but it picks up marks more easily. If you are hard on a watch, this is the one to think twice about.

Does it come in a box?+

No. It arrives packed for the post but without a presentation box. If it is a gift, that is worth knowing before you order.

Does it need winding?+

No. It is quartz, the battery is already fitted, and it keeps time on its own from the moment it arrives.

What happens when the battery runs out?+

You replace it, and at this price that is worth thinking about before you buy. Having a jeweller fit a new cell costs a real proportion of what you paid for the watch — one owner says outright that it would cost more to change the battery than to buy another one. Check what your local jeweller charges if that matters to you.

Which dial should I pick?+

Steel Silver is the one that disappears under a cuff and goes with everything. Steel Navy is the one with a bit of colour in it and the numerals to read at a glance.
